So in the past seven days I’ve noshed at not one but two buffets. That’s highly unusual for me, as in recent years I’ve avoided them like the plague.
My husband and friends have heard me say “Buffets are death” on more than one occasion. The reason is simple: it is much, much harder for the average human being to avoid overeating when presented with dozens of food choices and unlimited opportunities to go back for more.
It’s not that we’re pigs or lack “willpower.” Numerous researchers have demonstrated that being exposed to more kinds of food at one time encourages us to eat more.
If my plate contains three kinds of food (say, a pork chop, a baked potato, and some asparagus), I can eat them and feel quite content. If I see 27 kinds of food on a buffet, I have the desire to taste many more things.
Another reason we overeat at buffets is that there are different kinds of satiety. That is, I can eat chicken and rice and feel satisfied—but when someone offers me a sweet food, like peach pie, I find my appetite is rekindled even though I thought I was full 60 seconds earlier.
I had reached the point of satisfaction with savory foods, but I hadn’t reached satiety with sweets. And if someone offers me peach pie, chocolate cake, and ice cream, well, let’s hope I’m wearing an elastic waistband.
(Speaking of which: There is research indicating that people are less likely to overeat at parties and buffets—times when lots of food is present—if they're wearing a snug belt. Something to remember.)
I was pleased with the way I handled the Indian restaurant today and the breakfast bar last Sunday. One plate, not piled high, with food left over. Everything was delicious, but my focus was on the friendly conversation, not the food.
Most of the time, though, I order from the menu. Why tempt temptation?

I don't actually have a plan when I eat out although if I know I am going out I will be more careful about what I eat earlier in the day. And, like you, I try to stay away from the buffet because it's just so hard to resist!
